A note on responsibility

How to choose a responsible breeder

A few things worth doing with any breeder, whichever breed you choose.

  1. Meet the breeder and the dogs. Visit if you can, meet the puppy’s mother (and father, if he’s there), and see where the dogs live.
  2. Ask about health testing. Ask which health screenings the breed’s parent club recommends, and to see the results for both parents.
  3. Expect questions in return. A good breeder wants to know about your home and plans, and may keep a waiting list rather than always having puppies ready.
  4. Get it in writing. A written contract should cover health guarantees, registration, and what happens if you can no longer keep the dog.
  5. Look for a lasting contact. Responsible breeders stay in touch, answer questions for the life of the dog, and will take it back if you ever need them to.
