A note on responsibility
Breeders listed are CSKC members who have agreed to our Code of Ethics (PDF, opens in a new tab). CSKC does not endorse, guarantee, or supervise any specific breeder. Prospective owners should ask questions, visit the breeder, and review contracts carefully.
Try the AKC Marketplace (opens in a new tab), or find the breed’s parent club (opens in a new tab), which can often put you in touch with breeders.

How to choose a responsible breeder
A few things worth doing with any breeder, whichever breed you choose.
- Meet the breeder and the dogs. Visit if you can, meet the puppy’s mother (and father, if he’s there), and see where the dogs live.
- Ask about health testing. Ask which health screenings the breed’s parent club recommends, and to see the results for both parents.
- Expect questions in return. A good breeder wants to know about your home and plans, and may keep a waiting list rather than always having puppies ready.
- Get it in writing. A written contract should cover health guarantees, registration, and what happens if you can no longer keep the dog.
- Look for a lasting contact. Responsible breeders stay in touch, answer questions for the life of the dog, and will take it back if you ever need them to.
